Big League Chew was created in 1977 by Rob “Nellie” Nelson, a minor‑league pitcher with the Portland Mavericks, and teammate Jim Bouton, a former MLB All‑Star. Inspired by ballplayers’ chewing tobacco habits, they devised a healthier, mess‑free alternative: shredded bubble gum in a pouch styled like chewing tobacco, but brightly coloured and fruity.

After pitching it around, Wrigley Company licensed and launched the product in May 1980, packaging it with a playful, cartoon-style design by artist Bill Mayer. Later, in 2010, production and brand rights moved to the Ford Gum & Machine Company in New York.

Over more than four decades, over a billion pouches have been sold worldwide, and the gum earned the moniker “The Hall of Fame Bubble Gum™” as an official partner of the Baseball Hall of Fame. In July 2025, Big League Chew made history again by featuring MLB superstar Aaron Judge on an official pouch, the first-ever player to do so.
