History of Double Bubble Bubble Gum

Double Bubble was accidentally invented in 1928 when Walter Diemer, an accountant at Philadelphia’s Fleer Chewing Gum Company, modified a previous experimental recipe that had failed as “Blibber-Blubber.” His new formula was less sticky and better for blowing bubbles. He tinted it pink simply because that was the only food coloring available, creating a trend that persists today.

The first 300-pound batch was wrapped in saltwater taffy-style paper and sold in a local store for a penny each—all sold out on day one. In its first year, sales exceeded $1.5 million. The wrappers featured comic strips (Fleer Funnies) with characters “Dub and Bub,” later replaced by “Pud and pals.”

Ownership evolved over time. In 1998, Concord Confections (based in Toronto) acquired Double Bubble, expanding its global footprint. In 2004, Tootsie Roll Industries took over, ensuring the brand continues its legacy today.
